Life in Words

Another World

16/03/2014

IMG_20140315_170909

 wereld vol vrede, liefde, blijdschap. Ik denk dat C.S. Lewis gelijk
 waar we eigenlijk thuishoren.
We
Sometimes I desire something I can't reach. Something elusive. A desire
I can't really put my finger on. Maybe you know the feeling: a feeling
of homesickness to a world you don't even know. A world filled with
peace, love and happiness. I think C.S. Lewis is right when he says it
points to who we really are and to the world in which we really belong.
A world of the future, in which we actually belong.
The world in which we actually belong is filled with peace, love and
happiness. A world in which 'all was well' ( see Genesis 1). We were
created for that world. Everything that deviates from that is a bad
reflection or a distant echo at most of how it's supposed to be.

18/10/2013

Verstoorde relaties.

Psalm 139

14/06/2013

God, investigate my life;

    get all the facts firsthand.

I’m an open book to you;

    even from a distance, you know what I’m thinking.

You know when I leave and when I get back;

    I’m never out of your sight.

You know everything I’m going to say

    before I start the first sentence.

I look behind me and you’re there,

    then up ahead and you’re there, too—

    your reassuring presence, coming and going.

This is too much, too wonderful—

    I can’t take it all in!

Is there anyplace I can go to avoid your Spirit?

    to be out of your sight?

If I climb to the sky, you’re there!

    If I go underground, you’re there!

If I flew on morning’s wings

    to the far western horizon,

You’d find me in a minute—

    you’re already there waiting!

Then I said to myself, “Oh, he even sees me in the dark!

    At night I’m immersed in the light!”

It’s a fact: darkness isn’t dark to you;

    night and day, darkness and light, they’re all the same to you.

Oh yes, you shaped me first inside, then out;

    you formed me in my mother’s womb.

I thank you, High God—you’re breathtaking!

    Body and soul, I am marvelously made!

    I worship in adoration—what a creation!

You know me inside and out,

    you know every bone in my body;

You know exactly how I was made, bit by bit,

    how I was sculpted from nothing into something.

Like an open book, you watched me grow from conception to birth;

    all the stages of my life were spread out before you,

The days of my life all prepared

    before I’d even lived one day.

Your thoughts—how rare, how beautiful!

    God, I’ll never comprehend them!

I couldn’t even begin to count them—

    any more than I could count the sand of the sea.

Oh, let me rise in the morning and live always with you!

    And please, God, do away with wickedness for good!

And you murderers—out of here!—

    all the men and women who belittle you, God,

    infatuated with cheap god-imitations.

See how I hate those who hate you, God,

    see how I loathe all this godless arrogance;

I hate it with pure, unadulterated hatred.

    Your enemies are my enemies!

Investigate my life, O God,

    find out everything about me;

Cross-examine and test me,

    get a clear picture of what I’m about;

See for yourself whether I’ve done anything wrong—

    then guide me on the road to eternal life.

Seeing, hearing…

01/06/2013

Writing:
letters to my friend Rianne and my penpal Jeannea’.
I love witing letters. It’s so nice to recieve one, knowing someone put the effort and thought into it. I have quite a heap of letters I keep in my room. Every once in a while I love to read trough them and enjoy the memories.

Reading:
Jesus Calling by Sarah Young. Many of you may know it. It’s a daily devotional where Young wrote down all the things God spoke to her heart. It’s great to read, as Gods words are always, as the book says, a way of enjoying peace in His presence.

Listening to:
Zion, by Hillsong United. This cd is mazing! I love the song Oceans (post about it here and here), but I also like the rest of the cd. A song from the album Aftermath, also by Hillsong United, is one of my favorites:

Review: Verbroken Betovering door Angela Loeve

30/05/2013

This review is in Dutch, as the book is only available in Dutch.

Review: Forgotten God by by Francis Chan

01/04/2013

Forgotten God by Francis Chan

Lately I have been reading ‘Forgotten God’ by Francis Chan. It’s a very informational book, has 117 pages and I first chose it because of the nice quotes of Francis Chan I came across on the internet. As you might have noticed by this post, I have been thinking and studying about the Holy Spirit lately. So this book in particular really spoke to me, more than Chan’s other books. So, here we go!

Francis Chan is the best-selling author of books, Crazy Love, Forgotten God,  Erasing Hell and the host of the BASIC.series (Who is God & We Are Church). He has also written the children’s books Halfway Herbert, The Big Red Tractor and the Little Village and Ronnie Wilson’s Gift.

Francis is the founding pastor of Cornerstone Church in Simi Valley, California, and is the founder of Eternity Bible College. Francis now lives in Northern California with his wife, Lisa, and their five children.

I chose this book, as I said, because of my current interest. But also because it promises to teach you a lot about the Holy Spirit. And it does. Not in a book-wise way, but on a very personal level. Chan always writes clearly, understandably and gives a lot of examples from his own life and from those of people he knows. He is never dull, but sometimes it takes a bit of persistence to read this book. Mostly because, with a subject like this, it’s hard to really make a statement without going beyond what the Bible says about it. And of course, it is very important to keep the Bible as a guide. So sometimes it reads more like a very thorough Bible study than anything else. But that is also the beauty of this book. Everything Chan says about the Holy Spirit and His influence on peoples lives is based on Biblical truths. This makes this book a perfect guide of the Biblical view on the Holy Spirit.

Chan’s way of writing is thorough, empathic, provocative and filled with humor. He is never dull. Look at this quote, for instance,. It’s a great explanation of a Biblical given, but it’s also funny:)

Years ago, when a random thought came into my head, I decided to share it with my life. ‘Have you ever wondered what caterpillars think about?’ I asked. Not suprisingly, she said, ‘No’. I then proceeded to tell her about the confusion I imagined the caterpillar must experience. For all its caterpillar life, it crawls around a small patch of dirt and up and down a few plants. Then one day, it takes a nap. A long nap. And then, what in the world? (…) What happened to its dirty, plump little worm body? What does it think when it sees its tiny new body and gorgeous wings? As believers, we ought to experience the same kind of astonishment when the holy Spirit enters our bodies. We should be stunned in disbelief over becoming a ‘new creation’ with the Spirit living in us. As the caterpillar finds its new ability to fly, we should be thrilled over our Spirit-empowered ability to live differently and faithfully. Isn’t this what the Scriptures speak of? Isn’t this hat we’ve all been longing for?`

As you can see, the book talks about the effect the Holy Spirit will have on your life and who He is. Most of it will be known to most Christians, but Chan challenges you to take a better look at your feelings, God’s work in your life and the way you react on and listen to the Holy Spirit.

One of the best bits of the book, in my opinion, is the following quote:

In Galatians 3, we read that ‘Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us… so that we might recieve the promised Spirit trough faith. (vv 13-14) Wow. (…) Christ redeemed us from the curse we were under so that we could recieve the promise of the Holy Spirit. The ‘Promised Spirit’ is not a small promise. Jesus suffered a gruelling death so that I could have the amazing gift of the Holy Spirit. How dare I take this for granted?

Some other inspirational quotes:

Upon foretelling His death, Jesus comforts the disciples by telling them that ‘another Counselor’ is coming (John 14:16 NIV). In John 16:7 He goes so far as to say it is to their advantage that He leave so the Counbsellor can come. And in Acts 1:4-5, after His death and resurrection, He tells His disciples to stay in Jerusalem and wait for the Holy Spirit. (The sidsciples obey because that’s what people do when someone rises from the dead and gives instructions). Jesus’ disciples had no idea what or whom they were waiting for, or what it would be like. But they were expectant and trusting because Jesus had instructed them to wait for this good gift. Then in Acts 2, we see the fulfillment of this promise in a way that must have shocked the disciples. The Holy Spirit’s power is unleashed like no one had ever seen or experienced before, and Peter shares the amazing promise that this Holy Spirit is available to anyone who believes. The Epistles tell us of the Holy Spirit’s amazing power at work in us, our Spirit-enabled ability to put our sin to death trough Him, and the supernatural gifts He gives us.

(…) His gift of the Holy Spirit is really not for our own pleasure or purposes. The Spirit is meant to lead us toward holiness. The Spirit is here with us to accomplish God’s purposes, not ours. When you decide to put to death – to crucify- your flesh, you are by default choosing the way of the Spirit. You are leaving one path and joining another.

Something I missed in this book is a very practical thing. A lot of people won’t know simply HOW to hear, see and experience the Holy Spirit. Chan doesn’t really explain ways to learn how to do that. Maybe because it’s very subjective and there is no biblical way mentioned to do so besides meditation and prayer. But still, some extra experience from believers would have been nice.

All in all I really like this book. It can be a bit dry, but never boring and it’s filled with Biblical examples.

The book can be bought online and in a (Christian) bookstores.

Hi!

21/03/2013

Hi!

First, I have a question. Do you like my blog? What do you like about it, and do you come here often? What would you like to see more, and what less? Could you please leave a comment answering a few of these questions? I get quite some visitors on this little blog, but not a lot of them leave comments, so I never know what you think of it all.

So what are you up to this week? I’ve had a busy one so far. On monday I have therapy, which was very tiring this time. I had an appointment about my medication on wednesday, which also was kind of stressy. Tonight though I’m going to do something fun: singing with my girlfriends. We try to do this every two weeks, but in reality it’s more like once a month. But that’s okay, every time we get together to sing it’s really nice! I’ll try to take some photos this time.

At the moment I’m doing a She Reads Truth Bible study via You Version. It’s really easy if you have a smartphone. You just download the You Version app and start a reading plan. If you don’t have a phone with wi-fi, you just go to the site and read on your laptop or pc. I’m reading the ‘Songs of Ascent’ plan, and I’ve included the first day of this plan in this post, so you can see if it’s something you would like to try!

x

   Read: Psalms 120-134
Imagine a journey.  You are tired.  You are hungry and thirsty, yet you will not rest until you’ve completed this journey.
This journey is a marathon–it is long, and it is tiresome.  You don’t worry about winning: you simply want to make it to the goal.  You want to reach the finish line.
As you are walking or running, you begin hearing voices.  These voices are singing, and the noise grows louder and louder until soon everyone around you is singing with all of their might.  As you hear the words, you realize you know the words and begin singing with them.
One might think that singing would cause more exhaustion–how on earth could you continue walking or running?  Instead you gain more momentum as the songs continue.
Each word brings encouragement and hope.Each verse takes you to a memory–a moment in your life’s journey.Each song begins and ends: bringing you closer to the finish.  Preparing your heart as you close the gap.
Sisters, these are the Songs of Ascent.  We are so excited to raise our voices together with you as we read through this section of the Bible found in the book of Psalms.  Each chapter is a song that was sung as the annual pilgrimage to Jerusalem was made in celebration of the Passover.   Whether you’re new to us or been along for several of our journeys through the Scriptures, we can all agree that there is something powerful about a group uniting around God’s truth, just like his people did years ago on the way to Jerusalem.
Each day we will look at one chapter of Psalms together, followed by a New Testament selection–each grouping tied together with a common theme.  And while these verses were written many years ago, the truth is that they are just as applicable to us as ever before.  Times changes, culture shifts, inventions created: His truth stays constant.  Always.
Persecution.  Hope.  Community. Peace.  Thankfulness. Blessing.
As we prepare our hearts for tomorrow, I encourage you to take time to do a few things–I’m a big believer of marking the day.
Read through Psalm 120-134.  Read it as you would a story or a letter.  We will focus on each chapter in the upcoming days, but today?  Just let His truth wash over you.
After you’ve read these chapters, write out a prayer.  You don’t have to write it out, but I urge you to take time to do so.  Remember sister,He knows your hurts, your insecurities, your struggles, and your fears.  He is also rejoicing with you!  He knows these things, yes, but He loves to hear from you.
Take time to tell Him, and ask Him to speak loudly in your life as we embark together.

Reading

01/03/2013

Lately I’ve been catching up on my reading. I have a big stack of books I want to read, plus a whole bunch of books that are waiting for me on my e-reader. Life has been hectic, but the quiet moments are made sweeter with a nice book in front of me.

 My new e-reader. My brother wanted my tablet, which I hardly use and if I do only the e-reading app. So we made a deal, and tadaaaa: a brand-spanking-new e-reader for free!
It’s a Kobo Toutch. You can buy it in stores and online.

 The book I read most: my Bible. As you can see I’m an avid hightlighter. The version I read from is the dutch Herziene Statenvertaling, although I also enjoy reading the King James, NIV and the Message.

The little and beautiful notebook my friend gave me. I use it as a prayer journal, so it gets a lot of use!

What I’m reading right now: The Forgotten God from Francis Chan. It’s about the fact that a lot of churches and people have kind of forgotten about the holy Spirit and what to do about it. Sofar, it’s really good, and when I’ve finished reading I will do a review. Talk to you soon!
