Welcome to the Weekend #11

Weekend! Velen van de Hollanders onder jullie zullen vandaag of later dit weekend Sinterklaas vieren. Mijn familie en ik vieren het pas volgende week, dat kwam wat beter uit. Ik heb voor iedereen iets heel leuks kunnen vinden en ben heel benieuwd wat ze ervan vinden! Ook heb ik voor mijn vriendinnen (behalve voor mijn vriendin in Duitsland, daar zou het pakketje te laat aankomen aangezien ze volgende week alweer naar Nederland komt) nog een kleinigheidje bezorgd. Ik hoop dat iedereen een leuk weekend heeft en een beetje kan uitrusten van een (vast wel) drukke week!

Weekend! A lot of the Dutchies among you will be celebrating Sinterklaas today or later this weekend. My family and I celebrate it next week, that worked better with all the schedules. I got everyone something very nice and am so exited to find out what they think about it! I also delivered little presents at my girlfiriends houses (exept at my friend in Germany, because she will be back in Holland next week and then the packaga would arrive too late). I hope everyone has a fun weekend and can take a rest from a (probably) busy week!

Mae Burke van Deeply Rooted schreef een stukje over de feestdagen. Nu is dit stukje vooral gericht op Amerikaanse christenen. Onder christenen in Nederland is het nog niet echt helemaal ingeburgerd om elkaar (veel en grote) kado’s te geven met Kerst, vanuit de gedachte dat het belangrijker is om je Kerst te besteden aan God’s kado aan ons dan aan kado’s aan elkaar. Ook is Santa niet echt ‘een ding’, hoewel winkels ‘m meer en meer proberen in te laten burgeren. Lekker eten is er natuurlijk altijd wel bij, en ook daar kun je bewust mee bezig zijn in het Kerstseizoen. Klik op het plaatje om naar het artikel te gaan.

Mae Burke of Deeply Rooted wrote a piece about the holidays. Now, this piece is mostly aimed at American christians. Amongst christians in the Netherlands it’s not really a thing to give each other presents for christmas, from the thought that it’s more important to spend christmas focused on God’s gift to us instead of our gifts to each other. Santa also doesn’t really play a role in our christmasses, although shops try to give him more and more popularity. Good food of course is always a big thing on christmas, and that too can be something you deal with consciously. Click on the picture above to go to the article.

Zo waar! Goed om eens over na te denken / So true! Good to think about for a while

Ann Voskamp van A Holy Experience vertelt een verhaal over haar vriendin wiens zoon afgelopen zondag zelfmoord heeft geprobeerd te plegen. Hoe zij geen hoop meer heeft en alleen maar kan huilen. Ann neemt haar vriendin mee naar een vlindertuin – gewoon om te praten, samen te zijn en misschien een beetje hoop te krijgen door de prachtige natuur om hen heen. Haar vriendin zegt dat ze zó graag een foto wil maken van een bepaalde vlinder met zijn vleugels gespreid- vleugels die helder hemelsblauw zijn. Ze wachten en wachten, maar zien steeds alleen de bruine buitenkant van de vleugels. Ann bidt: Heer, geef hoop, alstublieft. Geef haar dit éne, zodat ze verder kan gaan. Een teken uit de hemel. Dan zijn de batterijen van haar vriendin’s camera bijna op en besluiten ze dan toch maar- zonder hoop- te vertrekken. Maar als ze naar buiten stappen, rent éen van de verzorgers op hen af. Er zit een vlinder op Ann’s schouder. Met helderblauwe vleugels. De vlinder waar ze op hebben gewacht. Volgens de verzorger gebeurt dit nooit: deze vlinder is te schuw, landt niet op mensen. Maar de vlinder blijft zitten, 25 minuten lang, met zijn vleugels open. Je kunt op de foto klikken en dan ga je naar het prachtige artikel.

My friend, she’s nodding at me. Nodding at this wide open blue butterfly on my shoulder. And her face is right wet, an ocean of ache running like a waterfall of hope now, right off the edge of her chin, and she chokes it out — “How could we ever not believe? How can we ever not hope in impossible things now?”

Ann Voskamp of A Holy Experience tells a story about her friend whose son has tried to commit suicide last Sunday. How she doesn’t have any hope anymore and can just cry. Ann takes her friend to a conservatory – just to talk, to be together and to get a little hope trough the beautiful hope surrounding them. Her friend says she wants to make a picture of a certain butterfly só badly, a butterfly that spreads his wings and those wings are bright sky blue. They wait and wait, but only see the brown outer wings of the butterfly. Ann prays: Lord, give hope, please, please. Give her this óne thing, so she can move on. A sign from heaven. Then the batteries of her friends camera are running low, and they decide to walk away without hope. But when they step outside, one of the rangers runs towards them. There’s a butterfly on Anns shoulder. With bright blue wings. A butterfly they’ve waited for a long time. According to the caretaker this never happens: these butterflies are too skittish, never lands on people. But the butterfly stays put, 25 minutes long, with it’s wings wide open.
